The Kelefas is the most important castles of Mani. Built by the Turks in 1670, in their unsuccessful attempt to control the region of Mani.
Itilo is a beautiful, large and historic village, which seems to lie between Inside and Outside Mani. In Oitilo you need to do stop in Ntekoulou Monastery.
In the bay of Itilo, known as pirate lair, the first settlement that we encounter is the picturesque seaside village Limeni, where the tower of Mavromichali dominates, known as the Palace.
At the exit from Itilo of Mani, you will see the ruined monastery of 'Panagia Vrettos''. On the north shore of the bay there is the Karavostasi with the small harbor. At the bottom, a short distance from the coast, ancient fluted columns have found an ancient shipwreck, amphorae and 2nd BC century.
Around 1675, about 800 Oityliotes, most members of the great family of Stephanopoulos, were forced to leave from the village to escape a huge feud erupted between the family and the pirate Lyberaki Gerakaris who named Bey of Mani. Those who escaped the hardships arrived at Cargese Corsica where they found refuge.
Today Itilo and Cargese are two same cities. Customs and traditions were kept and even meet today in Cargese.
